When a Crisis Strikes: Lessons for Management & Investors – September 16th, 10 am

Overseas-listed Chinese companies have become magnets for controversy in the past few years, due to attacks by predatory short sellers or shortfalls in their own accounting and governance practices.

This panel will be led by Peking University professor Paul Gillis, the most respected expert on Chinese accounting issues, and will include Drew Bernstein, co-managing partner of Marcum, Bernstein & Pinchuk, who has advised investors, senior management, and independent directors in a variety of crisis situations including short attacks, accounting restatements, and whistleblower scenarios. Other speakers include Robert Weber, partner at DLA Piper, and Cara O’Brien, senior managing director at FTI Consulting. The panel will discuss issues including: Who are behind short selling reports? What risk factors should investors look out for? and, How can companies respond to a crisis and recover a positive reputation with investors?

Decoding Economic Reform: Risks and Investing Themes – September 16th, 11:15 am
Opinion among international investors is sharply divided between China bulls who believe the government is shifting the economy towards a more sustainable model based on internal consumption, and a bearish view that increased stimulus has simply delayed an inevitable crash due to unprofitable overinvestment and speculation.

Cheng Li, Director and Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, is one of the most respected commentators on the evolution of China’s senior leadership and China’s political and economic policies. He will face off with Anne Stevenson-Yang, the co-founder of J Capital Research, which provides in-depth economic research on China to international investors. Expect to hear incisive and divergent views on the state of China’s economy and the prospects for effective reform on what is really happening inside the corridors of the Communist Party and across China’s sprawling economy. The panel will be moderated by conference director Crocker Coulson.

The Return of the Overseas IPO: Riding Alibaba’s Tailwinds – September 16th, 1:15 pm
2014 has witnessed a strong revival of U.S.-listed Chinese IPOs and this month Alibaba has the potential to be the largest tech IPO of all time with a $20 billion offering on the New York Stock Exchange.

Panelists including David Selvia, managing director of The Cathay Funds and Trevor Loe, vice president of The Vintage Group, will discuss what investors are looking for in Chinese IPOs and how new U.S. regulations have made the path to going public easier. The panel will be moderated by Mitch Nussbaum, partner at the international law firm Loeb & Loeb LLP.

China Goes Out: Ramping of Chinese Outbound M&A – September 16th, 3:30 pm
Leading Chinese companies are increasingly looking at overseas acquisitions as a means of acquiring world-class technology, penetrating new markets, and building global brands. In addition, many of China’s technology giants have set up private equity funds to invest in promising early stage companies in the U.S. and elsewhere.

This panel includes investment bankers and advisors who have advised on dozens of cross border transactions involving Chinese companies, including David Lu, head of China corporate finance for Duff & Phelps, Charles Maynard, senior managing director of BDA, and John Zhang, partner at ValueLink. Matt Kirmayer, senior partner at of top-ranked bankruptcy law firm Lowenstein Sandler LLP will discuss how Chinese management can acquire assets and entire companies at bargain prices in the bankruptcy process.
